Wasps or Bees or Hornets???
I drove over to New Berlin area after work today to observe and photograph this paper nest. I have never seen such a nest in this area. Upon close examination, it seems that it is the nest of Mexican Honey Wasps. As their name implies the Honey wasp gathers nectar and stores honey. The honey is stored in layers of combs covered with an outer protective paper layer. These wasps sting but are generally mild mannered. This area of Texas is the extreme northern range of this insect. In Mexico where it is more common, the honey produced is sometimes gathered and consumed by humans.
