Sights of Sicily

Valley of the Temples - World Heritage Site - Agrigento (Greek name was Akragas)

Temple of Concordia(built from 510-430 B.C.) by Greeks

Concordia is the best preserved Temple in the Valley probably due to the fact that it later became a Christian church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul

Very old olive tree -

Arcosolium tombs in wall of city

Arcosolium tombs date from Byzantine period

more tombs

Greek Temple of Juno(built between 470 B.C. and 450 B.C.).

Temple of Juno believed to have been dedicated to Poseidon

Looking out over the Mediterranean just as the citizens of Arkagas must have done while watching for ships from places like Rhodes and Athens and Crete

Temple of Dioscuri

Temple of Dioscuri was dedicated to the Gods of the Land

Built during third century B. C., this theater hosted the assembly of the citizens

Scala dei Turchi

In English, it is called the Turkish Stairs - invading Turkish pirates used this route to reach the highlands

                                                        The newlyweds

I thought the smooth undulating layers of white rock were almost hypnotizing

We climbed the steps for this photo

Castello di Falconara - near Licata, Sicily

First section of castle was square tower built between 1392 and 1422 for coastal defense

During 1500s castle was enlarged and continued role in coastal defense

Castle was enlarged and turned into a manor
  in the 1800s

                                                    Below the castle

Agriturismo il Pozzo Antico - Mascali, Sicily

Jewel of a bed and breakfast for only 40 Euros a night... We highly recommend

The associated restaurant

Great view of Mount Etna from porch

Mount Etna is an active volcano

That is volcanic ash that has accumulated on the tile roof of the bed and breakfast from one of Mt Etna's more volatile days

The restaurant which normally doesn't open for lunch, opened just for us. Fantastic food and service

I got such a kick out of the wine coming out in glass pitchers

Two delicious flavors of frozen gelato for dessert - pistachio and chocolate

Nonno Carmello keeping a close eye on that chocolate gelato

Taormina, Sicily

                                           Rocky beaches and pretty water
I wanted to get in the water but it was just too cold - next time!

Taromina and its beaches attract multitudes of European tourists

Teatro Greco - Second largest Greek amphitheater in Sicily -           Fantastic panorama that includes views of Mediterranean and Mt Etna

Teatro Greco is believed to have been built about third century B.C. by Greeks

                                                     How about that "blue water"?

Gabriel and Granny Sally about to get more gelato

Gabriel and his Poppy taking a break in the alley stairway

Other Photos

Duomo of Catania was built between 1078A.D. and 1093 A.D. and dedicated to Saint Agatha(the patron saint of Catania).

Duomo of Catania - The story of St Agatha is quite inspiring as she was tortured to death in 251 at the age of 20 for teaching Christianity to children.

Lemon tree

Orange trees

This valley had thousands of greenhouses

Mimosa blooms

Following tradition, Agata left her bouquet at a random location to bless their marriage
