Sally and I went on a road trip today. We started the day at High Island with a visit to the bird rookery at Smith Oaks Sanctuary followed by a visit to the Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary to search for songbirds. From High Island, we headed down the coast to Crystal Beach with an occasional stop to hunt seashells or read a historical marker. After crossing over to Galveston on the Bolivar Ferry, we headed north to Seabrook and a visit to Maas Nursery where we purchased a couple of new plants for our backyard sanctuary - Scarlet Sage and Passion Vine.
The Smith Oaks Rookery is amazing but we were actually on the tail end of the nesting season. It seems the ideal time to visit would be late in the afternoon sometime in March/April. We have got to get the grandkids to the rookery next spring.
