Weekend Outdoor Adventure on Geronimo Creek and San Marcos River

While road hunting for critters(spotted cottontail, jackrabbits, deer and raccoons.) on Saturday night, we stopped at Dean’s Store near Kingsbury. During my teen years, we would hangout and play pool at Dean’s Store. The grandsons though it was pretty cool to visit the store and they signed the ceiling as thousands of others had done through the years. Then we went bullfrogging. No gig. Instead, they bare handed 2-3 bullfrogs each.
Sunday morning, the grand boys fished and built a rock dam on the Geronimo creek. Gabriel caught 5 catfish on rod and reel and Luca amazed us by catching a big sunfish on a hand-line that he made.
Sunday afternoon we headed over to San Marcos river near Fentress where we set up camp. We seined up some bait and set a few drop lines by wading the river. The boys showed their courage as they got in the river at night as we checked lines. Only one nice catfish but it turned out to be quite a challenge in the dark as the line had gotten caught up in log jam.
Monday morning, I woke up to Gabriel yelling excitingly “the tree is moving”. He was down on the river bank and had spotted a limb jerking on the opposite shore and knew we had a fish on. We waded across the river and netted that fish and then actually added two more catfish as we checked the rest of the drop lines. Fun times!
