Devil's River Adventure - 1989

Mike Sanders, Dan Rowell, Booter(beagle)  and I traveled out to near Del Rio where we put into the Devil's River near Baker's Crossing.  Over the next two days we paddled downstream about twenty miles where we exited at a private ranch.  Highpoints were fabulous fishing for small-mouth bass, water so clear you can see the bottom clearly at 5-6 feet depth, abundance of springs flowing out of the base on the cliffs near Dolan Creek, Booter barking all night at whatever it was out there in the dark near our camp,  and  the awesome Dolan Falls.  I had read about Dolan Falls and seen a couple of photos but none of that did it justice. We could hear the roar of the falls from a long ways off.  Pulled up in the shallows when it appearred that the river was dropping out of sight and continued on foot up to the falls. At first, you can't help but be spellbound from the thunderous sound, the sheer power of the foaming water and the beauty of the scupltured rock.  Our state has many fine natural wonders but I believe this is the best of the best.

In between the long slow sections of the river, there are some fast water sections like this that can be run or portaged

Lunch break! We were all by ours out there...Only saw only one other person on the river during this entire trip.

                                                   narrow but passable chute

We ccouldn't float these shallow rapids so we had to line the canoes down to the next deep hole of water.
