The Honey Shack
I recently stopped by our old home place in Geronimo and visited with the present owner about this sign that hung for many years on my dad's roadside honey stand.
She gave me the sign after she saw that it had great sentimental value to me. Thanks, Pam Hartman. My dad (known to many as the Honey Man) sold honey from this stand on highway 123 where the public served themselves. Yes, he trusted people to leave their money in the jar and make their own change when necessary.
I put several coats of varnish on the old sign to keep it from deteriorating any further and hung it on the side of my new workshop. Working on this sign brought back a flood of memories of my dad. Some of his old sayings were echoing through my mind while I was working. Things like "Bow your neck, Boy!", "It's a long row to hoe!", "Get outa that fart sack!", "The early bird gets the worm" and "Let's make hay while the sun shines!". I don't think it is a coincidence that most of his sayings had to do with challenging us to work hard.... For dad believed hard work built character and would keep us on the straight and narrow.
I found this photo(about 1965) that shows the old honey stand. That is highway 123 and Hermann Sons Hall in the background. Check out Wayne with a super cool hat ( he was always trying to cover up his big head) and how about Tim and the shades..he was always a fashion leader. And I must have just gotten back from the beach because I am wearing my surfer cross.
