June 9, 2010 Geronimo Creek Flood

We woke up on Wednesday morning to a heavy downpour...it rained about 5 inches in two hours at our house.. Some locations in the upper reaches of Geronimo Creek watershed had gotten as much as 10 inches during the night. By 10:00 A.M., the Geronimo creek was out of it's banks and rising rapidly.  As estimated from our bluff, it appears that the flood crest was about 15 feet above normal. According to the neighbors, this flood was just shy of the 2002 flood and was maybe 6 feet short of the historial record flood of 1998.
Photo #1 shows how close the creek got to the driveway of the lowest elevation house in the neighborhood and the only house that flooded in 1998 and 2002. Photo #2 is taken from the oak tree on the bluff behind our house ...if you have looked down at the creek from this tree, you know what a phenominal amount of water is rushing by.

  1. Wow, that's a lot of water. Reminds me of Chocolate Bayou in Port Lavaca. We're glad you guys didn't get any water in the house.

  2. Wow! Glad you are all okay. We were out of town and didn't even know about all the rain. We only had Dallas news. Do you still have a garden?

  3. First of all, I had no idea you were a blogger, still waiting on your arrival date to SE Louisiana to treasure hunt. Found out that in Lake Ponchartrain, there is an island called "Oak Island", one of the locals told me that the pottery and arrowheads are still there, he was there a few years ago after Katrina, all new stuff, they only stayed one afternoon.

Oh, and I hope the water stops rising, what is your beaver going to do?
