Late summer activity

It has been awhile since my last blog.... I have been wanting to post these late summer photos, but teaching kept getting in the way.

The first two photos were taken at the creek.  Nephew Jeffery reeled in this monster fish.  Niece Natalie was willing to help out as long as she didn't have to touch it. Why are the women cooling off in the creek while the men do all the work trying to catch supper.

A friend and fellow beekeeper, Sherman Schlichting, and I tried to capture this hive of honeybees from the ceiling of an outside storage room. We cut down all the honeycombs and wired them into standardized bee frames. We were able to capture most of the bees but we must not have gotten the queen because the bees didn't stay in their new home. This is the fourth time that we have tried to capture a hive in this manner and so far we have lost all four hives back into the wilds. There will be a next time.

We have been really enjoying the hummingbirds at our feeders. After having only 2 or 3 birds at a time this summer, we have had a whirlwind of activity for the last three weeks. It is impossible to get an accurate count as they zoom around but I would say that we have 12-15 birds at a time at the feeders. It is so much fun to watch them socialize and chase each other around the backyard.  Is it a sign of old age when you get such a big kick out of watching hummingbirds?
