Checkered Garter (Thamnophis marcianus)

Saturday afternoon, found this small Checkered Garter snake squirming through the grass in the backyard.  This is the third Checkered Garter snake found in the two years that we have lived here.  They tend to stay near water and feed mostly on tadpoles, minnows, salamanders, and small frogs.
