Extracting honey

Sally and I along  with Sherman and Joy Schlichting extracted honey on Saturday night.  Sherman and I had gathered the honeycombs from our bee hives during the afternoon and we had waited til dark to extract  so the wild honeybees in the area wouldn't be robbing the honey while we worked.  Honeybees don't fly at night.

Working the bees

An electric hot knife is used to cut the cappings off the honeycomb cells. Check it out...the cappings are white and when the cappings are cut off the orange-colored honey shows.

Honeycombs are spun in an extractor(centrifuge) that draws the honey out of the honeycomb cells

The wax cappings cut off by the hot knife are hand squeezed to seperate the honey from the wax
