Ocracoke, North Carolina

Headed down the Outer Banks(narrow strip of barrier island) of North Carolina, we stopped at Kitty Hawk to see where the Wright Brothers made the first flight. There is quite a bit of development on Hatteras Island (northern island) connected to mainland by bridge. We traveled thru towns with familiar names like Nags Head and Rodanthe. At Hatteras(south end of island) we hopped on ferry and took an hour cruise over to Ocracoke Island. It was about sixteen miles of nothing but lonely beach and sand dunes to the Village of Ocracoke.... remote, quaint village of about six hundred residents. This is the only village on the island, all access to mainland is by ferries. Our destination was our rental for the next three days (Edward's cottages) where we would relax after our the whirlwind time in Washington.

There were four flights and the distance of each is marked by a white stone marker.
