Big Bend Country

Making spring break memories. We had such a perfectly wonderful time.  It was an awesome adventure.  Looking at the photos of our four days and seeing the shear joy on the faces of the kids, I was reminded of this quote - "Children are the living messages that we send to a time we will not see."

                                           Awesome sunset through the Window

As we start down the Window Trail

Our group on the window trail

                                                              Burro Mesa Pour-off

Grand kids at the pour off of Burro Mesa ... one of my favorite easy kid hikes.

Chris got this shot of Big Bend Tree Lizard - Such a beauty!

Justin got this shot of a Greater Earless Lizard.

Gorgeous Big Bend sunrise on day two

River Road just west of Lajitas, Texas follows Rio Grande river

Closed Canyon Trail in Big Bend State Park

                                                                           Buskirk's

Look how close the walls become - This is why this type of canyon is referred to as "slot canyon"

Cora makes time for a Granny hug on the trail

Closed Canyon was the favorite hike of most everybody... the shear walls made for lots of shade

"Hey Volleyball girls"...it is pretty cool out here in the mountains

Lucy and Carson found these quartz crystals on the canyon floor

There were plenty of places to climb

We could have spent the whole day climbing on the rocks

One of my favorite photos - eleven mountain goats -  Where is Luca?

Luca found a dung beetle ...  they roll manure into balls and store it for food

Forever Friends having a new adventure ...chasing kids in a slot canyon

Testing the water depth - This is as far as we could go without swimsuits

Varnell's

Buskirk's at Hoodoos Trailhead

All the way from Nebraska  to join in the fun... Justin's parents Dean and Sonya and his niece, Shaylynn McConville

Frank and Kara Kotlarz and their boys

On the banks of the Rio Grande River

No swimsuits didn't stop this group from taking a swim

Jake and Ryan in a patch of Big Bend bluebonnets ... much taller than Hill Country bluebonnets

Waiting to eat at Starlight Theater - Lucy shows us her hula hoop skill

Agata was like the hula hoop champion of Sicily

Cora was not to be out done - three hula hoops at one time.

When in Terlingua, we never miss a chance to eat at the Starlight.

Starlight is very rustic on the inside but really great food

I had a taste of Luca's antelope burger

At the end of another glorious day

Let's take a shot of all the teenagers and younger

Sally and I and the grandchildren

We made it to the end of Lost Mine Trail-

My first experiences as a Poppy go back to Lucy's birth(15+ years ago).

Jake is looking rather studly

The trailblazers taking a rest in the shade at the top.

Haley and Cora taking a break after climbing 2.3 miles.

Find some shade and eat and drink lots of water

Varnell's at Lost Mine Trail trail end

Three generations of mountain men at the end of Lost Mine trail

                                                                     The Survivors

Boquillas Canyon - digging in the sand

                                                                  tunnel building

Haley is a gritty girl ... she gets right in there with all  the boys

Ryan wins again - he gets the award for being the dirtiest

Gabriel and Tanner help Ranger with program on fossils and rocks

 Luca almost loses his head

Haley has a Desert Spider Beetle

Looks like a spider but check out the number of legs

Sorry guys but it is time to head toward home sweet home
