Big Bend National Park and Terlingua

Made a quick trip out to Big Bend National Park with Erwin Lehmann and Mike Sanders. The kind of forever friends that are always ready for a little adventure even at the spur of the moment. I had brought along the ashes of my dear friend, Doug Hewlett, with the plan to leave him in a beautiful high spot in Santa Elena Canyon .

When we arrived at Santa Elena canyon, it was a most gorgeous day but the Rio Grande river was just barely flowing. None of us had ever seen the river level down this  low. After reaching the end of the Santa Elena trail, we decided to take advantage of the low water level and started walking up the river. There were a few places where soft mud made the hike challenging but the beauty of the canyon kept drawing us farther. We eventually reached a deep hole of water that would have required us to swim and we unanimously decided it was just too fricking cold for that foolishness.

While in the canyon, I said my goodbye to Doug and he now has a resting spot overlooking the majestic beauty of Santa Elena Canyon.

For those of you that love Terlingua and  the Starlight Theater, we ate there both nights and found the food just as delicious as ever and as always we met some interesting people while sitting on the front porch.  Viva Terlingua!
