Cow killer

Velvet ant! Commonly referred to as “Cow Killer” because the sting is so extremely painful that it could supposedly kill a cow. A friend brought me this 1 inch long female specimen. Females are wingless and have a stinger and she can sting multiple times. I decided to pick her up so I put on a leather bee glove for protection. It worked well as she stung the glove multiple times but the stinger did not penetrate the glove. Even though the size and name are very intimidating, I managed to get Gabriel, Ryan and Luca to touch the velvet hairs on it's back. I love it when they can get past their fear and do something new.
